The Ritz Hotel, London
(Catalogue nos. 37-40)
In keeping with the themes of dining and display seen in the previous section, are the lively and atmospheric renderings of the pastel-hued, Louis XIV style tearoom of the Ritz Hotel in Piccadilly. Trevor first came to know the venue in the 1980s, when, as a undergraduate, taking afternoon tea became part of his London ritual. While people are visible in the background, they are overshadowed by the grandeur and opulence of the setting with its lofty ceilings, sparkling chandeliers and gilt sculpture. The furnishings take on refreshingly animated quality, which, realised with Trevor’s swift and deft pen-work, create a heightened theatricality and whimsy that are deeply satisfying.
